Abstract (English): Objective. To describe the development process and main characteristics of the National Medical Care Protocols (PRONAM), a national strategy to standardize clinical practice at the primary health care level in Mexico. Materials and methods. We describe the methodological process led by the General Health Council, which included topic prioritization, integration of multidisciplinary expert groups, review of scientific evidence, consensus building, technical and interinstitutional review, formal approval, and publication. Results. Six clinical protocols were developed for primary health care: systemic arterial hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome, overweight and obesity, chronic kidney disease, the first 1 000 days of life, and vaccination across the life course. More than 80 specialists participated in their development. Conclusions. PRONAM constitutes a national tool to strengthen primary health care and promote the standardization of evidence-based clinical practice in Mexico. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
