| Abstract (English): |
Epilepsy is a public health concern with higher incidence rates reported in developing countries. Age plays a significant role in both the incidence and prevalence of the disease, which is most frequently observed in childhood and among older adults. The population of elderly individuals living with epilepsy has increased over recent decades, underscoring the need for further research into its epidemiology, etiology, comorbidities, pharmacological and surgical treatments, and status epilepticus. Socioeconomic, occupational, cultural, and regional differences must be taken into account when approaching this population. Importantly, the most common etiologies of epilepsy in older adults are cerebrovascular disease and traumatic brain injury, highlighting the importance of prevention efforts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
