Patients with type 2 diabetes have a markedly increased atherosclerotic risk. The risk of fatal coronary heart disease among diabetic subjects is comparable with that observed in subjects who have had a previous myocardial infarction. This increased risk has been mainly attributed to hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and inflammatory mechanisms. Adiponectin, which is solely synthesized in the adipose tissue, appears to play an important role in all of these pathways. The objective of the present study was to investigate the association between levels of adiponectin and HbA1c, blood lipids, and plasma glucose in men with type 2 diabetes. We studied 110 men with type 2 diabetes aged 39 to 85 years old. Fasting plasma glucose, serum cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, adiponectin and HbA1c were determined. The results shows that among men with type 2 diabetes, high plasma levels of adiponectin were positively associated with HDL cholesterol and inversely associated with HbA1c, triglycerides and hyperglycemia. These associations were independent of age. In conclusion, our study supports the hypothesis that increased adiponectin levels may be associated with lower hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia in diabetic subjects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |

Los pacientes con Diabetes tipo 2 tienen un mayor riesgo de aterosclerosis. El riesgo de infarto coronario entre los sujetos diabéticos es comparable con el observado en aquellos individuos con antecedentes previos de infarto al miocardio. Este aumento del riesgo ha sido atribuido principalmente a la hiperglicemia, dislipidemia y a mecanismos inflamatorios. La adiponectina, que es sintetizada exclusivamente en el tejido adiposo, parece jugar un rol importante en todo este mecanismo. El objetivo de este estudio fue investigar la asociación entre los niveles de adiponectina y la HbA1c, los lípidos y la glucosa plasmática en hombres con Diabetes tipo 2. Estudiamos 110 hombres diabéticos con edad entre 39 y 85 años. Se determinó glucosa plasmática en ayunas, colesterol sérico, colesterol de HDL, triglicéridos, colesterol de LDL, adiponectina y HbA1c. Los resultados muestran que en los sujetos diabéticos tipo 2 los niveles plasmáticos elevados de adiponectina se correlacionaron positivamente con el colesterol de HDL e inversamente con la HbA1c, los triglicéridos y la hiperglicemia. Estas asociaciones fueron independientes de la edad. En conclusión, este estudio sustenta la hipótesis de que el aumento en los niveles de adiponectina puede estar asociado con una menor hiperglicemia y dislipidemia en sujetos diabéticos.
