| Abstract: | We used to wait in a room that was always bright, where the television blared and the corners were stale with the smells of urine and cleanser and madness. In this room, a woman always cried, another paced the floors from morning to night. A man with a wide smile would always come to shake my hand, call me Pete and ask me to get the car and take him home. In this room, I used to sit with my grandfather, and we would wait. He didn't know why he was there, or who I was, but he knew this wasn't home. When the waiting became hard, the room too unforgiving, we would create a new room, a new reason to wait in a place far away. Now in his mind we were both young, waiting for the train that would take us from Cape Breton back to the gold mines of northern Ontario. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER] |
