| Abstract: | When the going gets tough, I turn to Barbara Pym and Laurie Colwin, whose novels epitomize comfort, rich with quotidian wonders such as whistling kettles, cosy sweaters, efficient secretaries and perfectly cooked eggs. They're also writers whose themes run together in my mind, and I return to them often - ideally while soaking in the bathtub - so that I can recall which book is which, but also because reading them feels like a homecoming. And then last spring, I couldn't read at all - a common pandemic complaint, but it hit me hard. I'd been in the middle of "Exit West," by Mohsin Hamid, which was striking closer to home than any dystopia should - and besides, I was busy refreshing newsfeeds for updates on Tom Hanks. But without a book in hand, who was I? To be without this outlet, in addition to the world being upside-down, was devastating. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER] |
