| Abstract: | VARIOUS ARTISTS Love Is A Four Letter Word (ABC/EMI) ØØØ This soundtrack is worth a listen even if you haven't seen the oh-so-groovy new drama series on ABC TV. For those who came in late, Love Is A Four Letter Word is set in an inner-city hotel. It traces the trials and tribulations of the mainly young people that live in and around the venue. The publican is played by Peter Valentine Fenton ¿ honest, that's his middle name ¿ who was the frontman with Sydney rock band Crow. A subplot of the series is the battle being staged between poker machines and purveyors of live music. It's a handy way of working guest appearances from some of Australia's best alternative bands into the script. Two of the acts featured on this disc include Novocastrian members. Machine Gun Fellatio have caused a stir in recent weeks over their penchant for on-stage nudity. But they went over a treat at ClubNova Newcastle last weekend. I'll go out on a sleeveless limb here and say that they were probably better received than the headline act, Grinspoon. Fellatio show they can also deliver in the studio with the horn-propelled I'm Not Afraid Of Romance, which could have been written by someone riding a motorcycle across the desert while day-dreaming simultaneously of spy-movie themes, surf music and barn dances. Next comes Pre-Shrunk's tribute to bass-heavy standover men, Sound Pimp. If they ever get around to making a Pulp Fiction sequel, this song should make the opening credits. But the other Pre-Shrunk offering, Hot Robots (complete with computer-generated vocals), should go straight to the recycling bin. Unfortunately, we don't get to hear from Merewether musical wunderkind Daniel Johns (the silverchair singer appears on the show shortly with his side project I Can't Believe It's Not Rock). But there is enough variety to satisfy punters during this happy hour or so. The standouts include Tim Freedman (The Whitlams) and Luke Harrigan (Lo-Tel) going it alone on Charlie No.1 and Disconnected respectively, Jodi Phillis pleading with her velvet voice on Waiting Wanting Holding, the underrated Bernie Hayes on the acoustic lament You Made Me Hard and all-grrl outfit Nitocris belting out Spouse Killer.
