Abstract: The article studies the association of severe depression with mutual immune and hypothala-mic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) system activation. Based on a normative database, morning saliva concentrations above 25 nmol/l are indicative of HPA system activation. Relationship of HPA system activity with impaired immune functions promote borna disease virus (BDV) replication. In contrast to active BDV infection, chlamydia pneumoniae sero-positive patients did not show increased baseline HPA system activity.
