There is a body of research showing deficits in executive functions (EF) in school aged children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and, to a lesser extent, in children with a disruptive behavior disorder (DBD), i.e., oppositional defiant disorder or conduct disorder. Although these disorders emerge already during the preschool years, few studies have been conducted on EF in preschool children with ADHD and DBD. In this study, 205 children between the age of 42 and 65 months participated: 61 were diagnosed with ADHD, 34 with DBD, 52 with both ADHD and DBD, and there were 58 typically developing children. Five tasks that have been developed to assess EF in preschool children were used [1]. Factor analysis revealed an inhibition factor and a working memory factor. Children from all three clinical groups performed significantly worse on the inhibition factor than the NC group, also after covariation with IQ. There were no significant differences on the WM factor. Preschool children with ADHD, DBD and ADHD + DBD have deficits in EF in the inhibition domain, but not in the WM domain.
