| Abstract: | Spinal cord stimulators (mainly for neuropathic and ischaemic pain), brain stimulators (mainly for tremor) and intrathecal drug delivery pumps (for pain and spasticity) are implanted in many European countries. The federal legislation and safeguards are extensive. The main country outside the European Union in which implantation is carried out is Switzerland. Wide variation exists not only in populations and implantation rates but also in the spectrum of clinical practice and in systems of reimbursement. Of the world-wide annual totals, approximately half the spinal cord stimulators, nearly all the brain stimulators and more than one-quarter of the 'pumps' are implanted in Europe.
