Abstract: The article discusses a multifactor model of the Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Test Battery and its relationship to cognitive status and psychiatric diagnosis. Despite the recent proliferation of multivariate studies due to the wide dissemination of "canned" programs (e.g., SPSS-X, LISREL, and SAS for computing discriminant function analyses, factor analyses, and canonical correlations, as well as multivariate analyses of variance), applied research in clinical neuropsychology has not to this point in time consistently attempted to perform latent trait analyses, but, rather, has proceeded on a variable-by-variable strategy for the interpretation of the relationships among several variables.
