Abstract: The article discusses the role of Antarctic krill in the biological carbon pump, which sequesters carbon to the deep ocean. It highlights how vertical migration behavior of krill contributes to the efficiency of the carbon pump by transporting organic carbon to deeper waters. The study found that migrating krill injected less particulate organic carbon into the mesopelagic zone compared to non-migrating krill, with seasonal variations in migration patterns. The research challenges previous assumptions about the impact of krill vertical migration on carbon export, emphasizing the need for further investigation into krill behaviors and processes affecting carbon flux.
