Abstract: This article focuses on digital archives and the impact on the user experience in searching these archives. The author, Hannah Frydman, frames this with their own research with Gallica, the Bibliothèque nationale de France digital library, on the history of queer sexuality and culture. Insights from other historians on search, including Tim Hitchcock, Lara Putnam and Dominick LaCapra, are presented. Topics include selection bias, keyword searches, and new search methodologies for digital archives.
