Abstract: The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between differential item functioning (DIF) and equating within the framework of population invariance of multidimensional item response theory (MIRT) equating. Employing simulated data from the simple structure MIRT model, the analysis encompassed four equating methods: simple structure MIRT observed score, unidimensional IRT observed score, unidimensional IRT true score, and traditional equipercentile equating. Findings indicate that population dependency of equating increases and reaches a critical threshold under conditions of differential form DIF. Under a relatively low (0.5) correlation scenario, the multidimensional equating method showed the closest alignment with the criterion in reflecting the interplay between DIF and equating. For higher correlation conditions (0.8 and 0.95), all methods yielded comparable outcomes. Additionally, differences in group mean ability between forms did not impact the population invariance of the applied methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
