Abstract: The article focuses on the unusual embryonic development of salps, a type of tunicate closely related to vertebrates, which involves invasion by maternal cells called calymmocytes that reorganize the embryo’s structure. Using advanced three-dimensional microscopy, researchers mapped this process in two salp species, revealing that calymmocytes express key developmental regulators and are partly removed through programmed cell death.
