| Abstract: | Using political cartoons during social studies and history classes can benefit students in many ways. When teachers use political cartoons to promote learning and motivate students, they often create more chances for students to enhance their academic skills. Unfortunately, many students find social studies and history classes boring because teachers frequently use rote methods of teaching rather than strategies that promote the development of higher-order thinking skills. To help teachers avoid this trend, this paper offers strategies on how teachers can use political cartoons to promote learning and motivation. Also included are resources for finding cartoons, lesson plans designed to teach students how to interpret these caricatures, and suggestions for selecting appropriate cartoons.
