Abstract: Context: Human placental extract functions as a biogenic stimulator and possesses important immunotropic, anti-inflammatory, and tissue-regenerative properties. It is known for its capability to modulate both cellular and humoral immunity, which assists in the healing process, especially in chronic, slow-healing wounds, and inflammatory conditions. Aims: To evaluate the clinical effectiveness of topical Placentrex gel in enhancing wound healing compared to the natural healing process after minor periodontal surgical procedures. Settings and Design: Randomized, single-blind clinical trial. Materials and Methods: This was a randomized, single-blind clinical trial. Twenty healthy patients aged between 20 and 50 years, who required minor periodontal surgeries, were randomly divided into two groups. Group A consisted of 10 patients who received Placentrex gel, whereas Group B had 10 patients in the control group. In both groups, postoperative medications were prescribed. Statistical Analysis Used: The outcomes measured included the Landry, Turnbull, and Howley Healing Index (HI), as well as the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for pain, assessed at 1 week, 2 weeks, and 1-month postsurgery. Mann–Whitney U test, Fisher's exact test, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and Kruskal–Wallis test were used for statistical evaluation. Results: The HI scores were significantly higher in the Placentrex group at both 1 week (3.40 ± 0.52 vs. 2.80 ± 0.42; P = 0.017) and 2 weeks (4.00 ± 0.00 vs. 3.30 ± 0.48; P = 0.002). Although VAS scores were lower in Group A at all time points, the differences between the groups were not statistically significant: week 1 (P = 0.128), week 2 (P = 0.151), and 1 month (P = 0.168). Conclusions: Topical Placentrex gel demonstrated earlier signs of improved wound healing after minor periodontal procedures, along with a trend of reduced pain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
