Background on cytokines, multifunctional mediators that modulate immune activity by receptor-mediated pathways; Details on how MIF binds Jab 1 and inhibits effects activated by the protein; Conclusion that MIF acts broadly to negatively regulate Jab1-controlled pathways, and that this interaction may provide a molecular basis for MIF activities.
