Abstract: This article presents information about a program that was used by several low-income middle schools to remove failure as a choice students could make in finishing their assignments. Instead of receiving failing grades for poor work or work not done, students were given several options to show eventual mastery of necessary skills and knowledge. The article also includes the results of interviews taken over nearly five years with both students and teachers involved in the program. Teachers learned that the program became more effective when they listened to students and gave them credit for suggestions and criticisms.
