Abstract: The article discusses professorial teaching and research conducted at research universities, the educational culture that distinguishes between the 2, and the synergistic effects of accomplishment in both. The authors, professors and biomedical research scientists at Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), explain their opinions on science education, noting the importance of content knowledge, analytical thinking, and other aspects of academics. The authors note evidence that accomplishment in these areas is best fostered through active engagement, inquiry, and research curricula.
