The concept of conflict is prominent in behavior theory, psychoanalytic theory, field theory and other approaches to the understanding of behavior. This emphasis has led to numerous theoretical, experimental and clinical discussions of the application of analysis of conflict to the interpretation of projective material. The article cites a study that applies a conflict analysis to the evaluation of fantasy data. Relationships are reported between an overt-aggression measure and fantasy-aggression scores, fantasy-aggression-anxiety scores, and fantasy-conflict scores for a sample of 10 to 13-year-old boys. Evidence indicates that the fantasy-aggression-anxiety manifestations, which intervene immediately upon the recognition of fantasy instigation to aggression, are related to control over overt expressions of aggression. In addition, among the aggression-anxiety manifestations, which follow the fantasy-aggression response, punishment by peers in fantasy is associated with a low degree of overt aggression while punishment by parents, teacher, or police is associated with a high degree of overt aggression. |
