| Abstract: | The article discusses research investigating the use of drugs to block HIV replication, called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), in adenosine triphosphate receptor (ATP) P2X7-driven diseases, such as macular degeneration. The inhibition of P2X7-mediated NLRP3 inflammasome activation by NRTI and NRTI inactivation of the effector of the NLRP3 inflammasome, caspase-1, which is induced by the restriction endonuclease Alu RNA, are discussed. |
