| Abstract (English): | The article addresses the need for refugees to have significant representation in the Executive Committee of UNHCR. The authors argue that refugees should make up 50% of the Executive Committee to ensure that the UN Refugee Agency is governed by the people it should serve. Currently, the Executive Committee is composed solely of States, which excludes the voice and participation of refugees in decision-making. It is proposed that the Committee adopts a governance structure similar to that of the ILO to guarantee refugee representation in decisions. It is suggested that refugee representatives be selected by themselves and that there be equitable representation in the Executive Committee of UNHCR. The UN General Assembly is urged to pass a resolution to allow the presence of refugee representatives in the Executive Committee of UNHCR. [Extracted from the article] |
