Abstract (English): The war in Ukraine began in February 2022 with the Russian invasion. After over a year, the war continues and Russian troops are focused on taking the eastern regions of Ukraine. The Ukrainian Catholic Church has been providing aid to those in need and supporting the most affected. According to the United Nations, in the first year of the war, around 8,000 civilians have died and 13,300 have been injured. Additionally, millions of Ukrainians have fled the country or become internally displaced. Despite attempts at ceasefire negotiations, Russia demands the annexation of Ukrainian territory, which Ukraine rejects. On the first anniversary of the war, prayer vigils were held in Ukraine, Rome, and other parts of the world, and Orthodox leaders called for an immediate ceasefire and the withdrawal of Russian troops. European bishops also commemorated the anniversary and called for an end to hostilities. China has released a "Document for Peace" opposing the use of nuclear weapons and defending Ukraine's territorial sovereignty, although it also criticizes the sanctions imposed on Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wishes to work with China to resolve the conflict but notes that any peace plan must start with the parties involved on the battlefield. Russia has announced the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, increasing international tension. The Vatican has expressed concern over religious persecution and called on governments to guarantee religious freedom as a minimum requirement for a dignified life. [Extracted from the article]
