| Abstract (English): |
Laywomen played an active role in the production of medieval art, including painting and manuscript illumination. They were part of the urban craft makers' family workshops, within which they were able to train and work. Most of them had to work under the shadow of a male member of their family, mainly their father or husband, and only a few went on to run workshops when they were widowed. This publication compiles and analyses accounts of these women during the last centuries of the Middle Ages along four regions: Kingdom of France, Flanders, and the Crowns of Castile and Aragon. Through the study of specific cases, it will be examined the documentary typology in which these names can be found and the main problems that the study of this issue presents: the dispersion, brevity and ambiguity of these documentary reports, and the difficulty in attributing works. | Abstract (Spanish): |
